As if you couldn't already tell by the shouting in the bar or the shaking of the apartment building or your neighbors getting nutty in the street - the Patriots defeated the Chargers last night 24 to 21.
Bostonist has long recaps for the Pats games, but this game was so miraculous that it deserves a little Redux. Judging by the pre-game stats and the power that is Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, it didn't look good for the Pats. The only advantage they had going in was sheer experience.
Early on, Tomlinson and company ran through the slower Pats like hot knives through butter. But Bostonist's theory is that everything changed in one moment that should be named - ta-da! - the "Head Butt of Doom."
The Chargers lost when corner Drayton Florence head-butted and kicked at tight end Daniel Graham in plain sight of everyone. The guy couldn't even be sneaky about it. Big Dump Truck left a comment at Universal Hub that summed up Bostonist's thoughts on the "Head Butt of Doom": "A headbutt in front of an official? Are you INSANE?"
However, the Pats weren't all that nice, either. At the end of the game, they had a perfect right to be happy, but the Pats mocked Shawne Merriman's "Lights Out" dance. They got called for it by the officials and LaDainian Tomlinson, who said, "They showed no class at all, absolutely no class, and maybe it comes from the head coach; there you have it." He has a point, but perhaps he should consult with Mr. Florence before talking about "class."
The Herald pointed a finger at Rosevelt Colvin for being one of the top taunters, and he needs to stifle it during the next game.
Note to the Pats - congratulations on your victory. You deserved it because, well, the Chargers started it with that head-butt business. But don't build bad karma because you're gonna need all the karma you can stand in the coming weeks.
