Last night the Golden Globes were awarded in California. We would have watched but 24 was on with hours 3 and 4 of season 6. If Scarlett was going to get groped again surely it'd be up on the internets in a matter of minutes (she didn't and it isn't). This morning we checked out the coverage of some of our favorite nominees. The Departed brought Southie to the big screen this year, and is now looking good for a possible Oscar nod (though the nominations won't be announced until January 23rd). Last night Martin Scorsese brought home the film's single Golden Globe for "Best Director – Motion Picture."
There were seven nominations for The Departed in six categories. Along with Best Director for Scorsese, The Departed was in the running for Best Picture – Drama but lost to Babel. The screenplay was up for an award too, the writing lost out to the scribes behind The Queen. Leonardo DiCaprio was up for Best Actor in a Drama. He was also up for that same title for his role in Blood Diamond, but lost both. Jack Nicholson was up for Best Supporting Actor – Supporting Role for his portrayal of the Whitey character in the film. Homeboy Mark(y Mark) Whalberg was also up for an award for his supporting role as a real dick of a cop. Poor Matt Damon, looks like the Cambridge native wasn't quite good enough.
While Scorsese was a real winner last night for The Departed and the buzz is about his prospects for an Oscar there still remains one big unanswered question: where's Whitey? A PR boost came to The Departed after Whitey Bulger was reportedly seen in a southern California theater. The rumors are unsubstantiated according to the FBI – but the truth remains that the informant who slipped through their fingers is still on the lamb years after he slipped through the FBI's fingers. Just a week ago, on January 5, the twelfth anniversary of Whitey's disappearance was marked. How did the FBI celebrate this event? They left him on the Top Ten Most Wanted list.
