Just last week at the Golden Globes Martin Scorsese took home the award for Best Director. Hollywood buffs tell us that the Golden Globes don't match up with what can be expected when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives out their 79th annual statues on February 25 this year, but the nominations released yesterday show that some of the boys from the film at least get to put Oscar Nominated next to their names for the next film. Local boy, Dorchester native, Mark (y Mark) Wahlberg grabbed a spot among the contenders.
The Departed which prominently featured scenes of Boston, held up traffic while they shot some parts on location, and had a story line dripping with staties, southie, and a local boy in cahoots with a Whitey-esque mobster, has a shot at five Oscar statues next month:
- Performance by an actor in a supporting role: Mark Walhberg
- Achievement in directing: Martin Scorsese
- Achievement in film editing: Thelma Schoonmaker
- Adapted screenplay: William Monahan
- Best motion picture of the year (the biggest prize)
It's still surprising with the long list of classic films that Martin Scorsese has directed that he's never been the recipient of an Oscar statue. Perhaps this will be the year for the prominent director. Of course we're rooting for The Departed to take home some honors if only because we feel the need to prove to the world that setting a film in Boston might afford mixed messages from the various state agencies charged courting production companies the resulting film can still be a winner.
