Weekly Music Picks: a Little Love

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg

We're digging through the week's music finding that the best deal of the week for jilted lovers comes from Upstairs on the Square. Local rocker Ad Frank plays a show for only $13 for singles, it's $14,000 for couples. Other than that and the iPod DJ Night at River Gods (you can't do all Al Green) we're ignoring the occurance of Wednesday. You'll probably be too busy for music as you're buying flowers, chocolates, or a teddy bear holding a heart and going out to some fancy dinner or you're likely finding out if someone will actually win the million on Deal or No Deal. Either way Wednesday will likely be a bust.

bostonistico.jpgGary Peacock, Marc Copland & Bill Stewart
Over the years, bassist Peacock has played with a veritable who's who of jazz, including Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon, Chick Corea, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler. But Peacock is perhaps best known for being one third of the most admired jazz trio working today: Keith Jarrett's group with Jack DeJohnette. And now Peacock has captured a bit of that group's legendary chemistry by forming his own trio with pianist Marc Copland and drummer Bill Stewart. Catch them in support of their new album Modinha.

bostonistico.jpgDanilo Perez Trio (also Saturday, 2/17)
Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez's compositions draw off folkloric and indigenous musics of the Americas in a manner that the NY Times' Ben Ratliff has called "a bold example of the musicological rethinking of jazz." The Berklee alum and professor has played with the likes of Paquito D'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval and is currently the pianist in Wayne Shorter's Quartet. He brings his trio to the Regattabar. With Ben Street (bass) and Adam Cruz (drums).

bostonistico.jpgThe Apples in Stereo w/ Casper and the Cookies
Some are saying that the Apples in Stereo's latest album, New Magnetic Wonder, is a chance for lead singer Robert Schneider to "let his geek flag fly." Geeked-out or not, the Apples in Stereo is your perennial best bet for punchy, infectious power pop. Denver-natives Casper and the Cookies open.

bostonistico.jpgSomeone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, w/ Chin Up Chin Up
Look past the gimmicky name and you'll find that Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's most recent album, Broom, is full of tender, well-written indie pop songs. You'll be hearing a lot more from the Chicago-based opening act, Chin Up Chin Up, in the next six months, so you may as well get on the bandwagon now.
Great Scott (Allston), 9 pm, $9

bostonistico.jpgLily Allen
The darling of the internets is wrapping up her first extended tour of US dates. Alright, Still – her first released album – hit the states just recently, though seemingly years after it was released across the pond. She's followed it here. After SNL a few weeks ago she makes it back to the east coast this week. Her show at Axis is sold out, but CraigsList seems capable of connecting you with the British spitfire.
