Funky Cold Beverages: Enviga and Liquid Cocaine

enviga.JPGBostonist is always on the lookout for funky beverages, alcoholic or otherwise. One nonalcoholic beverage, Enviga, is causing a stir in New England. Enviga claims to help people burn calories.

The Attorney General of Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, isn't buying it. He has been questioning Coca-Cola and Nestle's claims that the green-tea beverage, in the words of a Coca-Cola spokesman, "invigorates your metabolism to gently burn calories."

cocaine-drink.jpgIf you want to "gently burn calories," a walk around the block might do you more good.

But, if Blumenthal puts a stop to Enviga or makes Coca-Cola/Nestle change its ad campaign, then you might want to start hoarding it if you are a funky beverage nut. We'll pass just because, if it smells like BS, it probably tastes like BS.

We couldn't resist another nonalcoholic beverage that caused a stir because of its name. It's a little drink called Cocaine, which we picked up on eBay out of curiosity. (It's now being sold at a few places in Massachusetts.)

After a small can of Cocaine the Beverage, we were wired out of our minds and completed a incredible amount of housecleaning in a short amount of time. Isn't that what meth does to you?

Bostonist once called Moxie "punitive," and you could say the same for Cocaine the Beverage. However, the odd, peppery, burning taste of Cocaine the Beverage grows on you after a while. Supposedly that burning sensation mocks the numbness one feels after snorting some lines. It's also reminiscent of powdery candies, as if Sweet Tarts were ground down and hot pepper were added.

If you see any other funky beverages out there, let us know, and we'll pry ourselves from our can of Mountain Dew to try 'em out.

The Cocaine Beverage was mocked on The Daily Show several weeks ago. A clip of it is probably on youtube somewhere. It's a funny segment where the guy marketing it is really trying to insinuate Cocaine the "beverage" is just like Cocaine the "narcotic". And what do you know, he's marketing it to kids. Sick and twisted, but a funny commentary on the "extreme" drink craze.
