Google Maps Updated, Renames "T" to "M"

Online mapping never seems to be as good as it gets. When Google released the API for their maps a whole bunch of mash-ups started to swirl around the internets. All sorts of maps came on the scene with various levels of utility. But Google wouldn't leave their well enough alone. They released the satellite view of the maps, and introduced the hybrid view overlaying street data on top of the aerial view. Then they added levels of zoom that almost gave a view of where exactly the leak in the roof was coming from.

Recently the basic view was enhanced on the tight levels of zoom. Shaded semi-3D building outlines were added where data was available. It certainly makes downtown more interesting to look at in close up views. City Hall's outline shows up in the middle of the expanse of green that had until now marked the plaza. The street data now also includes information for cities around the country of where subway stations are. The folks at Google made an interesting choice to include an "M" in a square with rounded corners. It seems most similar to the Washington, DC metro symbol in blue. What it's not is the letter T that might be more familiar to those folks looking for a subway stop in a map of Boston. Shrug it off – at least they're located in the right spots.

Noticed that the other day too, but I thought it made a good deal of sense to use M. The word "metro" is pretty universal--a Russian visiting Boston for a conference, say, would know exactly what M is but wouldn't have any idea what to make of T.

A great recent "T"-using Google Maps mashup of course is the new mbta.com. Such an unbelievable improvement over the old site.
