AOL Names Best Of's

citys-best-2007-decal-150x1.jpgWe must have blinked and missed the two months of voting that went into selecting the 2007 AOL cityguide Best Of list winners. Starting in mid-November and wrapping up in mid-January, voting took place on line on the set of contenders who had been nominated by AOL cityguide for their best of rating – opportunity for there to have been a little pandering to sponsors, but we'll never know.

The categories seem endless: 24 categories in Best Dining, 14 categories in Best Nightlife – and a top ten in each. It tallies to a short list of 380 places around the hub to find the best of this or the best of that. Some things aren't surprising, like Legal taking home the prize for Best Chowder, you can take it in at any of their many locations. This, being just a few days after Valentine's day the lonely hearts are looking for the best single scene – according to AOL cityguide they'll find it at the number one spot Felt, or the number two seat WaterWorks. For some reason that category doesn’t seem to be fairly rated. Perhaps we're just looking to find fault in the little things they've got wrong. Llistling Lucky's as "Hip Rat Pack salute on Four Point Channel" for one – it's Fort Point, and we'll forgive you this time, AOL.

Lucky's makes the finest Martini in the city, has great food - and the Miller High Life bottles are great on a cold day.

The thing they got wrong was Redbones...some of the lousiest bbq I've ever tasted. The fact that they put Blue Ribbon at #4 demonstrates they don't know what they're talking about.

Hey - the readers voted, not AOL, right? We shoulda all voted for the best of the best.

I don't think Redbones is lousy - the staff is surly as all hell, sure, but the beer menu makes up for it.

It's true that CityGuide readers are the ones who determine who wins in each category. I voted like crazy for Bukowski's to win Best Burger but they still lost. Maybe next year ...
