Bostonist recently discovered a wonderful little Mexican place just on the outer edge of Cambridge - Maria Bonita is small and unassuming on the outside, but oh so much more once you have a seat within.
We were delighted by the selection and quality of the food here - it's a homey, charming little eatery. There's nothing too fancy on the menu (though the cevice we sampled was among the best we've had this side of Lima) but what's offered is made with care and perhaps even love. Unlike the chain-taquerias (which we must admit, we love), Maria Bonita offers food with a personal touch, variety, and authenticity. Don't let the counter fool you - this is no fast-food joint - it's a place to savor real Mexican food.

A very filling sit-down brunch for two cost us a scant $13 with beverages and extras - a real bargain; but the high point of the visit was our chance to talk with Cesar Mendoza (photo right,) the proprietor. He's one of the friendliest and most charming local businessmen we've had the pleasure of meeting. We would have been happy to simply linger over the food, but the delightful personality and charming atmosphere is the extra little bit that will keep us coming back again and again.
Highly recommended!
Maria Bonita is located at 2447 Mass Ave in Cambridge and you can call them at 617-868-1160

Cesar is one interesting cat - ask him about his days hanging out with the rat pack in LA - he has many cool stories.
I've lived in that immediate neighborhood off and on for almost 25 years and this restaurant is such a welcome addition. A, it's mexican and cheap and delish. Not that a B is needed after that A, but the atmosphere, with the red-painted walls, lack of a television (all too common in restaurants up here in the nosebleed section of mass ave), wooden furniture, etc., is relaxing and genuine.
Thanks for noticing our little gem!
