Happily Ever After for Gay Princes in Lexington

king-and-king.jpgA judge took two pairs of Lexington parents to class when he threw out their case against books about gay parents and gay princes being taught in the schools.

The parents filed suit against the Lexington school administrators after they felt their kids had been exposed descriptions of same-sex couples, which they felt violated their religious beliefs.

Judge Mark L. Wolf reminded these parents that they're sending kids to public schools and that "Massachusetts law prohibits discrimination in public schools based on sex or sexual orientation."

Wolf said that if these parents don't like it, they can teach their kids at home or send them to a private school. It's their problem - it's not the problems of the parents who think it might be a good idea for their kids to learn that there are other people in the world who aren't like themselves.

Here's another good statement from Wolf's 38-page opinion: "It is reasonable for public educators to teach elementary school students about individuals with different sexual orientations and about various forms of families, including those with same-sex parents, in an effort to eradicate the effects of past discrimination, to reduce the risk of future discrimination …"

Well done. Maybe the children involved in this case will learn more than their parents did. Their parents seem to be plugging up their ears and singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb!" as the world evolves around them. (Evolution pun intended.) When will these parents learn that their kids aren't going to "catch the gay" from books. Do they not have enough respect for their own children's intelligence to let their kids make their own choices?

Then again, why rant? This case turned out well and suggests faint glimmers of hope after the defeats suffered by proponents of same-sex marriage so recently.

In Massachusetts both Gay and Straight couples are permitted to marry, and since people get married all the time, how is it possible to shield kids from that? What are these parents afraid of, anyway? Do they think that exposure to the reality of Gay couples is going to somehow turn their children Gay? Sorry, but it just doesn't work like that.

It's a scary notion that there are a lot of folks out there who insist on marching us straight back into the past as if de-evolution and infantilism is a sane and rational option. As if ignoring the things in the world they don't like will make them go away.
