Scandinavians on Our Shores

Under Byen with Frida Hyvonen and El Perro del Mar will perform at the MFA's Remis Auditorium tomorrow night, March 2, at 7:30. You can get tickets on the MFA's website.

The local press has made much of Scandinavia's latest attempt to win the hearts of our indie rockers. We've been skeptical of next-big-nation news, and, besides, didn't we already hear that story when the Hives invaded in their matching suits?

And then we checked out the music of Swedish musician El Perro Del Mar, also known as Sarah Assbring. Her unbelieveably catchy song "God Knows (Gotta Give to Get)" will have you humming. This is one song you'll be happy to have stuck in your head, and the video is a delightful treat:

Danish band Under Byen and Sweden's Frida Hyvonen are also on the bill. Under Byen is decidedly experimental with Bjork-ish vocals. At first, they seem a little sleepy, but then they'll pull out some rock flourishes, as you'll hear if you stream their record on the Paper Bag Records site.

Hyvonen seems to fit in the up-front female singer-songwriter mold. The only element uniting the three acts is that they're from cold places, but they're all worth seeing. You'll definitely find at least one new favorite act.
