A sign hung outside of Picante one day as we stumbled to the Red Line one Sunday morning. It read "Brunch" and in smaller letters right next to that "Mexican Brunch." We had an inkling that Picante served such a thing (it's printed on their menu – but no times or days of the week are given). A few weeks later the decision was made to check it out. We price was right at about $5 for anything on the menu. The options are a bit limited, but not in an unexpected way for a burrito place serving brunch. We knew that Jonah, lead burrito analyst at BurritoBlog was on a mission to find Huevos Rancheros in Boston, we reached out with the suggestion he give it a try.
Our experience with Picante on Sunday's around noon has been mixed. The first time we went table service caught us off guard, but we embraced it. The food arrived quickly but the Huevos Rancheros were served without beans or rice, instead they had some damn fine potatoes. We ventured back, determined to eat brunch with rice and beans, ordered it up, and it was much better. This weekend we met up with BurritoBlog to give the Huevos Rancheros a third at bat - a BurritoBlog and Bostonist Brunch. The third time and the third different serving of the Huevos Rancheros dish. It was served a bit different than times we'd had it before, perhaps there was some foresight at the table as at least one Eggs Santa Monica (a failsafe spinach omelet) was ordered. Masa on Tremont St. in the South End makes a mighty fine huevos rancheros. Don't skip the sangria!
I just can't trust a blog about Mexican food that encourages people to visit Anna's. Sorry, thats just the worst "example" of food, let alone Mexican, I've ever had.
