The reasons not to drive in this town keep adding up. First is the issue of shoveling your car out of the snow. Second is the need to fight over your shoveled space. Third is the possibility of a city employee plowing your car instead of the snow. Fourth is the high cost of parking.
And now the fifth – people might steal your car. Once your car's been shoveled out, of course.
The BPD is reporting a dramatic increase in motor vehicle theft – we're talking 19% across the city since the beginning of the year.
For those wanting to keep their cars, the BPD recommends a few handy tips that you should have been following all this time.
First and foremost, don't leave anything that looks remotely valuable out in full view. The BPD lists items most often stolen from cars: "GPS Devices, US currency (left on the dashboard or in an ash tray), stereos and stereo face plates, electronic devises (cell phones, ipods, blackberry’s and chargers), bags, purses and briefcases." If you're the absentminded type, tie a string around your finger or do some crossword puzzles to beef up your memory.
Second, lock your darn doors! We do live in a city, and, even if you've got a beater, someone might find that beater useful.
Third (from Bostonist), ditch the wheels and ride the T.
