--A 44-year-old guy found out how hard it is to get into MIT when he tried to burgle a fraternity early Friday morning. Since these are MIT students, they were awake. They were also sober enough to realize that this individual wasn't a fraternity brother, though it would be hard to miss a large 44-year-old dude trying to hide behind a large-screen TV set.
Since the incident resulted in a flaming chase and the arrival of TV cameras, the MIT students were clearly overjoyed. One guy proclaimed, "This is one house you don't want to mess with!" Uh, OK, you guys handled the situation just fine, but settle down there, MIT tough guys.
--Chiara Levin, the young woman who died early Saturday morning in Dorchester, was an out-of-town visitor from the small town of Danville, Kentucky. (Ed. Note: She was also 22 and not 19 or 23, as had been first reported by the BPD.) The mayor is blaming late-night house parties for creating a violent environment. Bostonist, on the other hand, blames roving thugs with guns. People with guns who have no respect for human life killed this young woman. They killed Quinntessa Blackwell, and they shot little Sheldon Mathias. Guns and the people who use them are the problem, and we'd feel a lot safer if our local leaders were talking about guns instead of house parties.
Another note from the case deeply disturbed us: "Davis said the people with the victim did not immediately seek medical help but eventually drove her to Boston Medical Center, where police were called. He declined to say why the people failed to get immediate help." After Levin got hit, her so-called "friends" waited to take her to the hospital. We don't know the full story yet, but it says a lot that they a) waited and b) chose to drive her instead of calling an ambulance.
The Herald reported that a Cape Verdean gang member may have been involved in Levin's death: "Shortly after she arrived at the emergency room, a well known gang member, Jason Barbosa, 18, arrived with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Police sources said Barbosa’s connection to the shooting is not clear, but they are investigating. Barbosa has had multiple arrests and is considered a major player in ongoing Cape Verdean street violence."
--A stabbing happened at a park bench by Commonwealth and Dartmouth yesterday afternoon. According to the BPD, "The suspect approached and attacked the victim while he was sitting on a park bench after exclaiming, 'This is what you get for disrespecting me!'"
The guy must not have worried about getting caught. He walked off and was found just sitting on another park bench. At least the stab-ee is expected to live, and the police got the guy without any problems.
All charges alleged until proven under law.
