Sports Redux: What Sports Is All About

If you haven't seen the finish of the Division II Championship between Barton and Winona State, check it out. It's absolutely astounding; Barton's Anthony Atkinson scores 10 points in 39 seconds to turn a sure loss into an unbelievable victory. (Barton is located in Wilson, North Carolina, just so you don't have to look it up.)

It's hard to match that kind of a comeback, but the Celtics sure gave Toronto a chance last night. Leading coast to coast, the C's allowed T.J. Ford to almost pinball-machine his way into a shocking finish, but the Green held on, thanks to the usual solid play of Al Jefferson and Paul Pierce. Celts win 95-87, and astoundingly, haven't been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet. Don't hold your breath.

The Bruins are in Ottawa tonight, and if you've been holding your breath waiting for their playoff push, please leave in comments where you'd like mourners to have the flowers sent.

Daisuke Matsuzaka gave Sox fans a preview of their wildest dreams, throwing 5 no-hit innings against Cincinnati. Papelbon (Can we make him a one-name guy? That's what they show on the scoreboard.) also met our expectations, throwing a perfect 6th. Craig Hansen? Not so much; he gave up five runs in 2/3 of an inning. Gotta get that sorted out; they start counting in a week.

And finally, Curt Schilling. Love him or tolerate him, you have to hand it to him for calmly smacking down Dan Shaughnessy, for Dan's painfully unfunny faux-chat transcript that killed countless trees to sully Monday's Globe. (Dan Shaughnessy Watch goes into more detail.) Bostonist promises that if we ever reach the point where we hate sports, and hate athletes, and hate sports fans, we'll stop writing about sports. It's much better than stringing everyone along for 15 years of vitriol and misplaced snark.

Wow, thanks for posting that clip of the NCAA-II championship. I hadn't seen it mentioned yet. Utterly incredible, especially that reverse layup to tie the game. That's the kind of thing you do on the court as a kid; you never think you'll see it in real life.
