The season has begun! Well, it really starts for the Red Sox tomorrow when they play against the Kansas City Royals, but we have a raging case of spring fever.
The Red Sox held their last spring training game against the Phillies. With Daisuke Matsuzaka pitching, the team won 7 to 5. However, on Fox 25, we caught a glimpse of the Phillies' Pat Burrell giving Terry Francona the one-fingered salute. When people are flipping each other the bird on television that early, you know it is going to be a fun season.
The Globe also found out how at least one Red Sox player felt about former pitcher Ugueth Urbina's conviction for taking a machete to his employees. Mike Lowell was extremely gracious: "I don't know details or anything, but it's sad, whether it's true or whether it's not. It's sad that it's a guy who was awesome with us. My locker was right next to him -- me, Juan Pierre, and him. He was outstanding as a teammate. He really was." Then again, maybe he was scared that he'd get a taste of that Venezuelan justice, and we can't say we blame him.
In last night's Final Four of the NCAA basketball tournament, Georgetown fell to Ohio State, and Florida summarily disposed of UCLA. So it's the big state schools rumbling in the final game of the NCAA basketball tournament.
On to less exciting matters. The Bruins lost to the Atlanta Thrashers 3 to 2. After the Bruins "coulda-woulda-shoulda" kind of season, it's hardly surprising that the team owner suggested firing coach Dave Lewis. But general manager Peter Chiarelli says Lewis should stay. Lewis seemed willing to try everything, but his team simply wasn't clicking.
