The Sam Adams Boston Lager you're drinking was likely brewed in Cincinnati, or soon, Latrobe. The tour facility for the Boston Beer Company is within stumbling distance from the Stony Brook stop on the Orange Line – it's a good thing because they're just about to start up the summer season where the free tours happen pretty much every day, not just a few times a week. Today the Boston Beer Company, the parent of the Sam Adams brand, has made a formal agreement with City Brewing Company to start brewing their beer at the Latrobe, Penn. facility.
Already the bulk of the Sam Adams beer is not brewed in Boston. The largest supply comes out of a brewery in Cincinnati where the Boston Beer Company employs brew masters to make sure that their craft beer brewing process is strictly followed. The Jamaica Plain facility is their test kitchen (a really good reason to visit – you'll get to try some flavors that may never be available anywhere else, or ever again.) The company is still evaluating the construction facility in Freetown, Mass., but that assessment won't even be complete until this summer. Brewing in Latrobe is expected to commence in the second quarter – so sometime this summer. Latrobe, like Boston, has a rich brewing history. Most people know it for their Rolling Rock, which we were sad to learn today isn't brewed in Latrobe anymore. Anheuser-Busch bought the Rolling Rock brand last May, but didn't buy the brewery. City Brewing Company, based in La Crosse, Wisc. owns the brewery itself. Boston Beer Company beers will be produced there. The short version of this story from the business world is that there will be more capacity for brewing Sam Adams this summer. Let your cup never run empty.
