Boston Blotter: More on the Danvers Fire

040807_session9.jpgWe're still curious about the early Saturday fire at the former Danvers State Mental Hospital and present/future apartment complex. When we last heard, no one knew the cause of the fire, although one of the fire officials said: "We wouldn't leap to the thought that there were multiple fires set here -- that will be part of the investigation as we go forward -- but again the indication from the firefighters is that it had a tremendous head start."

Since many of the buildings were under construction, the sprinkler systems and other fire protections weren't ready yet. WHDH mentioned the trespassing often going on at the site, and the Globe wrote, "After being closed, the hospital quickly became a draw for thrill-seeking ghost hunters who believed the grounds to be filled with troubled spirits. The curiosity and trespassing forced to the state to employ 24-hour security guards for some time."

We joked that the hauntings and the fires were the stuff of Hollywood, and a reader noted that a movie had in fact been made about Danvers. The movie didn't involve luxury apartments, but it did star David Caruso as an asbestos remover who encounters ghosts. The movie barely got noticed, but it had a decent 58 (mixed or average) on Metacritic. Interestingly enough, the Globe panned it. Do you think it's time for a sequel? David Caruso is busy with CSI and all, but there's a chance …

--The BPD announced another shooting death, this time in Jamaica Plain. A 19-year-old man died, and police have arrested a 17-year-old and charged him with manslaughter.

--Another young man was shot to death Saturday night in Lowell. He was killed the day before his 16th birthday. Two suspects have been arrested.

All charges alleged until proven under law. Image of Session 9 poster from the Onion AV Club.

I really really liked Session 9. It's a solid drama pulled off on what was probably a shoe-string budget. David Caruso and the entire staff are great - to be honest it could be some of Caruso's finest work. He doesn't go over the top... It's a tempered performance in a strong drama.

Good luck trying to buy or rent a copy. It was hard to find to begin with and as far as I am aware there was only one pressing of the CDs. The manufacturer did a horrible job. Every other disc has major flaws - some don't play at all. I had to buy like five of them to find one that would play all the way through. Sadly, this copy of the film went by special request to my sister who now lives in LA. If you can find a copy of this movie, definitely check it out.
