The Bruins had their last game after flaming out so spectacularly toward the end of the season. They took on Ottawa and did what they do best - they lost, 6 to 3. When the Celtics are fighting harder than you are, you know it's time to hang it up.
Coach Dave Lewis offered his typically cheerful thoughts on the season finale: "It's an awful feeling to play the last game of the year in your building, taking the jersey off your back, and having it be the last game. It's a very emotional, frustrating, and disappointing time as an athlete."
In other nasty hockey news, Michigan State beat Boston College 3 to 1 in the NCAA college hockey finals. It was a sad game. Unlike the pro-level Bruins, the Eagles had some fire in them and stayed ahead until the very end. It's probably a small consolation, but they're probably better than the Bruins.
As our hockey hopes were dashed, the Red Sox were also busy losing in Texas. JD Drew didn't endear himself to anyone with a horrible two-base error. Starting pitcher Julian Tavarez proceeded to have a meltdown, and then, to add insult to injury, Sammy "Corker" Sosa hit a home run off JC Romero. Sosa should send Romero a thank-you note and some candy for giving him his first homer since 2005. The finals score was Rangers, 8; Red Sox, 4.
We'd like to blame it on the abnormally cold weather in Texas. Amalie Benjamin noted on Extra Bases that the temperature dropped to 38 degrees. Curt Schilling will be pitching today, and we hope he's revenge-minded.
And then the Indiana Pacers had to rub the Celtics' nose in it, beat the Celtics 105 to 98. But, as we tend to say about the Celtics, it could have been worse. Allan Ray and Sebastian Telfair did well, but it just get harder and harder to pay attention to the players themselves without thinking of the NBA draft. (It's on June 28, by the way.)
Oh, before we forget, even the Revolution lost to the Chicago Fire, 1 to 0.
