Support the Local Internet: 2007 Webby Awards

Webby_Logo.jpgToday the final list of Webby nominees was released. According to the press release:

Hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet" by the New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international awards honoring Web sites, online film and video, interactive advertising, and mobile content. The Webby Awards is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a 550-person judging academy...

Unlike other awards shows, where only judges choose the winners, The Webby Awards revels in the Web's democratic spirit. Starting today through April 27th, the public can cast their votes in The Webby People's Voice Awards presented by Verizon at www.peoplesvoice.webbyawards.com.

We looked through the list of nominees and found a three local contenders. Please let us know if there's someone on the list we missed. We count two locals in the "Web" section: MBTA and Tourfilter, one made the cut for the "Online Film & Video" section: DriveTime.

The MBTA was nominated in the Society cluster. A group of categories honoring sites that "empower and educate people, facilitate civic participation and enable learned pursuits." Yeah, well, the MBTA.com site helps us get here from there using the bus and the train since we've got to pay the $59 for that montly pass anyway.

Tourfilter has been our favorite tracking site for live music performances in the area since it launched a year ago. The site has grown a lot and added functionality and features to the services since that initial version we saw - but it's still ad-free and text based with friendly email notifications sent to us to remind us about upcoming shows by our favorite acts. They've got the biggest challenge in the Media cluster: "categories of sites that provide, review or critique media and information." The local site is up against big names in the category like BBC 1 Radio, National Geographic, and Last.fm. It'll be hard to beat out the mainstream sites, but maybe not for the People's Voice.

The 11th annual awards have summed this year's competition as The Year of Online Video. To that end a whole bunch of online video categories have been created in which nominees will compete. In the Online Film & Video cluster the Music/Variety category holds local vlogger Ravi Jain's DriveTime. The category holds quite a bit of variety. We think DriveTime should get the nod just because Ravi's car got ousted from the gallery at Green Street Station - isn't that enough?

There are the locals for your consideration. A full list of nominees in enough categories to fill two or three time killing sessions on the internets are available for voting at the People's Voice Webby site.

The nominations of both the MBTA and DriveTime can perhaps heal the rift of January's Audi-ousting from Green Street Station -- proof that personal transport and public transportation (and conceptual art) can get along!

What about Mercora? With the new "M" coming out this year (which turns your smartphone into a wireless music player), their new deal with Microsoft, not to mention their huge and diverse catalog of music, they should be in the running for a Webby. Just my two cents.

The Museum of Kitschy Stitches, which is nominated in the "Weird" category, is authored by a Boston gal!
