While monitoring the outcome of yesterday's baseball game, we couldn't help but think of a line from Rime of the Ancient Mariner: "Water, water, everywhere – and not a drop to drink!"
Well, if you count three measly plate-passes as a drop, then maybe the Mariners did in fact have a little to drink, but the Red Sox dominated the home opener at Fenway, 14 to 3. It was jaw-dropping and astonishing.
The other tremendous news is that Josh Beckett squelched Ichiro Suzuki's attempts at the plate. The Globe's Gordon Edes points out that "In 13 years of playing baseball on both sides of the Pacific, he has struck out in three consecutive at-bats only three times." This means that Suzuki will be nursing a grudge when he faces off against his countryman Daisuke Matsuzaka, who makes his home debut tonight.
And there was almost a fight thanks to old bad feelings between Brendan Donnelly and Jose Guillen! You know you've got a great game when the benches clear! Our Godzilla vs. Mothra reference might not apply to Dice-K vs. Ichiro - it could apply just as well to Donnelly vs. Guillen!
Oh, hey, with all the media madness swirling around the home opener, another Boston sports team had a game last night. The Celtics played the Atlanta Hawks. They lost, 104 to 96, but this is the Redux, and we feel the need to mention it. In other potentially huge Celtics news, NCAA golden boy Kevin Durant has decided to leave the University of Texas and enter the NBA draft. Can you imagine the fits people will have if he winds up on the Grizzlies?

If you look at it this way - getting the #1 pick almost feels like the kiss of death. The last time the celtics had the worst record they were in line to get Tim Duncan. Instead, the improbable Spurs had the luck of the draw. I don't know - if they get the 1 or 2 I'd be happy but for some reason the luck just doesn't feel like it's with the C's.
