Boston Blotter: But That's What the Marathon is For!

boston_marathon.JPGSome people use the Marathon to showcase their physical skills. Others use it to showcase their drinking talents. The BPD rounded up eight people (!!!) for boozing it up along the edges of the marathon.

Most of them got charged with drinking in public or drinking as a minor, but one guy from Brookline probably drew attention to the group because the law got him for "crossing the Marathon route and interfering with runners."

--Today's BPD blotter was chock-full of impressive incidents. A man from North Attleboro tried to be clever and break into a car during the Marathon Distraction. He didn't remember that the marathon would be crawling with police, and an officer caught him.

--A Dorchester man speeding through Roxbury told officers that he was driving at 70 miles per hour because his "gas pedal was stuck." He was probably more truthful when officers found pot in his sock. He declared, "I forgot it was there!"

--But wait, there's more from the BPD blotter! A 57-year-old man from Boston was caught breaking into a water pump station. He tried to run off, and the police found him wearing latex gloves. Get his explanation for those gloves – he said he was wearing the gloves to go to the bathroom. Officers recovered copper wire and took him in. We wonder if they kept the "bathroom gloves" as evidence.

--And we have reason to look on the bright side, if that's possible, regarding Boston crime: "Overall violent crime in Boston is down so far this year, despite a recent surge in homicides, according to police department statistics." The number of violent crimes dropped by 18 percent, which is a sizable amount.

Of course, those are only crimes police know about, and that knowledge won't make victims' families feel better. But, as Commish Ed Davis suggested, the decline may be proof that the increased number of police officers on the streets has helped.

All charges alleged until proven under law. We would have shown our standard "Norbecker Beer" sign, but we found this image of beery runners from Deadspin.
