Define This!
The Define-a-Thon will unfold at the Brattle Theatre at 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 19. Tickets are $5 to attend and $5 to participate, and you can get advance tickets from the Brattle's website.
You might be able to spell "quotidian," but can you define it? Harvard Book Store, the Brattle, and Houghton Mifflin will be asking you define even tougher words tomorrow night.
If you want to show off your word skills, you should head down to the Brattle tomorrow. American Heritage Dictionary Senior Editor Steve Kleinedler will moderate the event. It works like a multiple choice test in that he'll offer a word and several possible definitions. The people who choose the correct definition will move on in the competition.
The winner will receive an American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, and two runner-ups will receive the American Heritage College Dictionaries, which sounds kind of like Sanka compared to real coffee. Oh, and beer will be involved, which means people might be making up a whole bunch of new words.
If things get heated and/or beery, we wonder if Kleinedler will show off the vowel chart that the New York Times says is tattooed on his back.
