Weekly Music Picks: And All That Jazz

This week JazzBoston pulls together Jazz Week. More than 150 events, including concerts and lectures are held across the city. Jazz Week shines a light on the diverse and vibrant local jazz scene. It all wraps up with concerts on Sunday. A full line-up as available from the event website.

Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice
Churning out strange, occasionally nostalgic, and frequently psychedelic Americana, James Toth distinguishes himself in the increasingly crowded "freak folk" sections of basement record shops, with some help from Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo on the most recent album. GHQ, Gown, and Sunburned Hand of Man open.
P.A.'s Lounge (Union Square, Somerville), 18+, 8:30 pm, $8-$11

Avishai Cohen Trio
DownBeat Magazine called bassist/composer Avishai Cohen a "jazz visionary of global proportions." Born in Israel, Cohen spent time with the great Danilo Perez before joining forces with Chick Corea's celebrated Origins sextet and New Trio. The young bassist brings his trio, called "one of the tightest trios on earth," to Boston in support of their new album Continuo.

Adam Ezra Group, Braddigan, J.E. Borgen
The sound coming from the Adam Ezra Group is one of the most fitting for this transitional season: warm, rich, calming and optimistic. Couple this with the groove-based jamband stylings from Braddigan (that would be Brad from Dispatch) and the Middle East Downstairs may be one of the happiest, most laid-back spots in town on Thursday night.
Middle East Downstairs, 7:30 p.m., $18+ $12 adv/$15 dos

Syd
With all those singer-songwriters out there, a guy or gal with a guitar has to have a little something special to stand out from the crowd. Songster Syd is armed with three bits of notability: a band, the sharp news release "The Way We Found It," and a bright and random stage presence known to leave audience members laughing - and choking on that last sip of beer (not that Bostonist has ever done that). Syd celebrates his CD release with a Thursday night show at Paradise Lounge; Matt Duke shares the bill.
Paradise Lounge, 8 p.m., 18+ $10

Modest Mouse
When "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" became a music-lover's must-have in 2004, there was some fear that the band wouldn't have anywhere else to go - after all, after years of toiling in critically-heralded obscurity, would all the success mess up the work? As it turned out, the band did come up with some unexpected surprises (former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the ranks), but "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" continues to showcase the band's sonic progression - lusher and more mature than the candy-pink album we still spin in our CD player. The band brings their latest work (and, we're sure, "Float On") to the Orpheum on Friday night.
Marta Gomez
With her mesmerizing voice, Berklee alum Marta Gomez performs original compositions based on traditional South American indigenous folk music, including Colombian cumbias and Argentine zambas, with a great deal of hip jazz and indie folk thrown in to freshen the mix.

Spoon -- SOLD OUT
We don't doubt in the least that Austin-based Spoon has the chops to bring its breathy, lo-fi indie sound to the large festival crowds. But we hold fast to our belief that the sound is meant to be heard in a slightly more intimate setting that, say, Lollapalooza. As it stands, the band's Saturday show at the Museum of Fine Arts is the last smaller-venue date on its schedule - followed by performances at Sasquatch Festival, Bonaroo, Comerica City Fest, River to River in New York and that aforementioned 'Palooza. We think Boston fans are lucky, being able to get to take in the sound without a fear of sunstroke. The show is super sold out, but look around online. David Vandervelde and the Moon Station House band are also slated to perform.

State Radio -- SOLD OUT
Dispatch fans should be walking around in a state of nirvana: Braddigan on Thursday and State Radio, Chad Stokes' Dispatch followup, on Saturday. We have a feeling that many of those who packed the Hatch Shell at The Last Dispatch back in 2004 snapped up the tickets to Saturday's sold-out show at Avalon.

The Killers
Listen, we know that the Killers were all about making its music a little deeper, a bit more soulful when its sophomore release, "Sam's Town" dropped. But sometimes we just want glitz. Flash. A lot of eyeliner. We hope Brandon Flowers forgives us, then, for thinking of The Killers' impending visit to the Tsongas Arena in Lowell as an opportunity to hear the sonic pulsations of "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr. Brightside" live.
Tsongas Arena, Lowell, 7:30 p.m., $33.50

Sunday Afternoon to play out Jazz Week
Jazz Week Boston wraps up. Sunday afternoon, the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra pays tribute to Duke Ellington's film score music by pairing it with the animated films of Kate Matson (Museum of Fine Arts, 3:30pm, $25-30). Sunday evening finds a host of Berklee students, faculty, and guests presenting Freex to Geex 2007, a celebration and exploration of jazz and electronica (Berklee Performance Center, 7:30pm, free). For more information and the complete Jazz Week line-up, see the JazzBoston events website.
Monday 4/30
Van Morrison
There's apprehension that comes with seeing a musician live after he's been performing for a few...decades. Considering how long Van Morrison's been bringing the tunes, one might wonder if the guy still has it for his Saturday night Opera House gig. Rest assured: we saw him perform last year - the guy is still more than capable of bringing the hits to an audience.
Opera House, 7:30 p.m., $72.50-$147.40

Matt Durutti, C. Fernsebner, and Victoria Welch contributed to these picks.
