Marilyn Devaney and the Case of the Curling Iron

042707_curling_iron.jpgHow's this for political gossip? Governor's Councilor Marilyn Devaney is in trouble for allegedly throwing a curling iron at a Waltham beauty-store clerk.

The police report said Devaney shouted at the clerk, "Don't you know who I am?"

Well, we didn't know who she was, and neither did the clerk. Devaney is an elected official who "approves Treasury payments, pardons, and judicial appointments by the governor….She is also a Watertown town councilor."

Apparently that makes Devaney a Very Special Person. The unfortunate woman at Sally Beauty Supply in Waltham didn't realize she was in the presence of a Very Special Person and didn't accept her personal check for a Curlmaster Dual-Heat Spring Iron, thereby arousing Devaney's rage.

Devaney seems to find herself in these types of incidents. As recently as January 25 of this year, Devaney backtalked a police officer who pulled her over for driving without a license. By the way, the whole mess went down at Sally's Beauty Supply because Devaney didn't have a license to back up her personal check – a theme, apparently.

The Watertown Tab also noted that Devaney was involved in a crash off Storrow Drive and was cited for driving an unregistered vehicle. If she's involved in all these cases, where does she find the time to be a Governor's Councilor?

Devaney defended herself against the Tab's previous "hatchet job," but this latest story won't do her much good. Maybe people do have it out for her. All charges alleged, and so forth. But it's really hard to make up a curling-iron attack (we do the blotter – and that's a new one for us!), and it's even harder to justify a string of offenses all involving similar issues of IDs and registrations. Everyone's going to know who she is all right - but for all the wrong reasons.

All charges alleged until proven under law. Image of a curling iron from Conair-store.com.
