Boston Blotter: BPD Has a Long Memory

050107_arnaldo_lopes.jpgPolice blew the dust off a 1995 murder. In 1995, Bobby Mendes was stabbed to death, and police captured the man who may be his killer today at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Arnaldo "Nardo" Lopes had changed his name and had just returned from a Jamaica vacation.

Mendes' mother, Isaura Mendes, became a community activist and later lost a second son to violence. In response to the arrest, she said, "I don't hate anyone. I just want them to change -- to stop killing each other."

--Not everyone is listening to Isaura Mendes. Another person got shot last night in Roxbury outside Papa Reno's Pizza. The suspects tried to drive off but were captured after the car crashed, and the victim went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

--Chicago enjoyed some imported Boston crimefighting skills over the weekend. A college student from Roslindale was one of two students who rescued former Senator and presidential candidate Carole Moseley Braun from a mugger. Zachary Trayes-Gibson chased Moseley Braun's attacker off while the other student called 911.

--A teenager tried to throw a house party in Framingham while his dad was out of town. Only his dad must not have had much reason to trust the kid. Either that, or he had ESP. At about 11:30 pm, he called the Framingham police on the house and found that his son was indeed having a party with boozing galore. Wethinks Dad was setting a trap.

All charges alleged until proven under law. Image of the captured Arnaldo "Nardo" Lopes from BPDNews.com.
