Sports Redux: Steinbrenner Speaks Out

darthvader.JPG"Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed, as I'm sure all Yankee fans are, by the lack of performance by our team," said Yankee owner George Steinbrenner. But in the same statement, he reaffirmed his faith in manager Joe Torre and GM Brian Cashman to right the ship. With rumors of a deathwatch swirling in the Bronx, it will be real interesting (and, from Boston's perspective, joyous) to check the Boss' pulse after the next loss.

The local media spent all day sharpening their axes to greet new Patriot Randy Moss. Michael Felger says the Patriots can stop the "sanctimonious garbage" that the Patriots have apparently been peddling when they've brought past miscreants like Corey Dillon and Rodney Harrison into the system. And of course, Dan Shaughnessy reluctantly (ha) takes up the role of the Grim Historian, cataloguing every misdeed and controversy of Moss' career. Welcome to New England, Randy. On the other side of the coin, Bill Simmons says that even a beat up, expensive, used Ferrari with a questionable past and a questionable future is still a Ferrari.

It's been brought to our attention that we don't pay enough attention to soccer, so we'll dangle this tidbit in front of fans. FIFA has admitted that they're not convinced South Africa will be able to pull it together in time for the 2010 World Cup, and it's not out of the question that the USA is an official Plan B. Keep your fingers crossed. In the meantime, the Revolution are trying to get Taylor Twellman's game-winner named Goal of the Week, and sure would appreciate your vote.

Tonight, the most improbable upset in NBA history might come to fruition. Dallas, who cruised through the regular season as the #1 seed in the league, is on the ropes, down 3-1 to a spirited Golden State team. The Warriors had Dallas' number in the regular season, and have completely neutralized the Mavericks in the playoffs. Only the '94 Nuggets and '99 Knicks have gone from the #8 seed to the second round, so this could be huge.

This Warriors-Mavs series is really surprising. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
