Case of the Missing Corpse Becomes Case of the Mixed-Up Corpses!

050507_corpse_vanishes.jpgMark Flomenbaum might be breathing a little easier tonight. State police figured out what happened to the body of Thomas Brissette.

Even though the body was found, the results are still embarrassing for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Brissette's body went to a funeral home and was buried under someone else's name. Oops!

During their investigation, state police realized the corpse mixup and went to the grave intended for that corpse. They found Brissette's body instead.

It's a good thing they found it quickly, but Brissette's brother summed it up best when he said, "We were all trying to come to grips with his death, and now we have to deal with this."

More news emerged about Brissette, who was a smart guy struggling with mental and emotional problems. The Cape Cod Times reported that Brissette's girlfriend said, "Brissette would have figured if it would have happened to anybody, it would happen to him." Well, at least someone - living or dead - might have found the corpse mixup amusing.

Another interesting detail has emerged about the Case of the Missing Corpse - the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner waited a week after it knew Brissette's body was missing to inform the state. It's one thing if you wait and hope a problem goes a way, but it's another thing altogether if you're dealing with a dead body. They do tend to get smelly.

Flomenbaum will be cooling his heels on suspension, and Frederick Bieber, a Harvard pathology professor, will take his place. We don't envy Bieber since he has to clean this mess up. Perhaps they should have called on a hazmat professional instead.
