Boston Blotter: Rampaging Fire Truck

051507_tonka_fire_truck.jpg--We don't always put fires on the blotter, but a firefighter had bad luck during a Dumpster fire at Boston College early this morning.

However, it wasn't fire that hurt the firefighter – it was his department's own truck! The Newton Fire Department arrived to fight the blaze. The BC Heights reports, "While the fire truck was powering the pumps, the vehicle lurched forward, running over the injured firefighter. The truck broke through the fence bordering the edge of Upper Campus." It turns out that the truck slipped out of gear. Uh, whoops.

--New Bedford rounded up a sizable chunk of its gang population yesterday. In a massive antigang strike, police took in 30 alleged members of the Latin Kings, and they hope to nab seven more. All of them have been charged with drug-related offenses. We were tempted to title today's blotter "Latin Kings Dethroned," but the rampaging fire truck was a little more appealing.

--There's always a big ruckus about predators on mySpace, and now you can add thieves to the list. A guy who was hoping to meet an 18-year-old girl in Gardner on Saturday received a false bill of goods.

When he arrived for the hot date, he met two guys instead, and they proceeded to rob him of pretty much everything, including an iPod. The lesson? If a late-night meeting with a nubile filly seems too good to be true, it probably is.

--In news of the mystifying, an aspiring police officer who was qualified enough to be offered a job in Northampton was eventually turned away because he wears an insulin pump.

It turns out that Massachusetts won't let anyone who needs a pump be a police officer. Sure, some people can't be officers for clear medical reasons, but being turned away for an insulin pump that is about the size of a pager? The Herald also noted that having an insulin pump isn't a problem for people who want to be firefighters.

Gregory Hennick has filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, and he's applying to be an officer in Connecticut.

--And in good news, the statue of a girl reading that was stolen from the Abington Library has been recovered before anyone could melt it down.

dude, the most amazing thing about the firefighter incident is that the other firefighters "lifted the truck off of him" according to the second article. so not only can firefighters put out fires, they can also lift vehicles weighing several thousand pounds. badass.
