Big Dig for a Different Driving
It came from the tales of Troop E. WBZ followed a tip that State Troopers were using one of the ventilation facilities constructed as part of the Big Dig for a driving range. What's news to us is the sheer volume of the ventilation buildings that allow for a third floor with 25 foot ceilings. We knew they were big just looking at their protrusions on the surface, but never knew they were that big. The investigation started with the public disclosure by WBZ and was followed up on in a morning story by the globe. By this afternoon it was clear that there had, in fact, been a make-shift driving range. A net had been up in a ventilation shaft in East Boston.
The investigation hasn’t released much juicy information on the driving range. According to the WBZ follow-up we know that there was a driving range. The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority concluded that Big Dig officials asked State Troopers to take down the golf net three times, and that there weren't any Big Dig workers using the facility. It's still not known to what extent the State Troopers were using the facility. Troop E officers, who are stationed at the East Boston site in question, may have been using the ventilation building as a golfing range and justifying the use (according to the Globe) as part of their mandated exercise regimen. Well, they haven't actually said that the driving range counted as part of their exercise, but the facility did store other equipment such as stationery weights and bicycles for the motorcycle troop, we can only imagine how the blue shield might be raised in this investigation. When all is said and done with the investigation we hope that what might come of it all is that when we're talking 'greens' and 'Big Dig' in the same sentence it's not about ventilation shafts but part of the Rose Kennedy Greenway, which still isn't all that green.
