Sports Redux: Yet More Rain Edition

48450694_66f42d9087_m.jpgIt seems that Mother Nature didn't think the Red Sox's doubleheader sweep of the Tigers on Thursday was impressive enough - the first games after that two-fer will be tidily bundled in another dual-game gameday. The Sox called Friday's scheduled game against their Interleague Play Atlanta visitors pretty early, deciding instead to go the route of a 1 p.m./7:35 p.m. Saturday schedule. The pitching breakdown: Dice-K vs. Braves pitcher Anthony Lerew in the afternoon game, Devern Hansack vs. John Smoltz beneath the lights tonight.

And what of the Friday night ticketholders? Here's the deal: if you were slated to attend Friday night's game, show up for the second game today. And dress warmly regardless of which game you're attending - the temps aren't slated to creep above 52 degrees all day.

So, without our usual Sox roundup, where can Bostonist turn? If we're anything like the Globe, we would head to Tampa, where Roger Clemens pitched four innings of minor league ball on Friday. He gave up four hits, including a homer to Fort Myers Miracle first baseman Erik Lis. We would like to point out that Lis was exactly two months and seven days old when Clemens made his MLB debut. Fort Myers went on to beat the Tampa Yankees, 8-5, but Clemens' showing suggests that he might be back earlier than anticipated. If you want to count four innings as a strong showing, that is.

-- Good luck and happy retirement to Ron Borges, who announced Friday that he is leaving the Globe after 24 years as a sports reporter to see what else is out there in the sports journalism world. Over the course of his Globe career, Borges covered NFL and boxing.
***UPDATE: How soon we forget! We should have said "Borges covered NFL and boxing, but was in the news back in March, when he was benched for lifting a Seattle writer's work and putting it in his Sunday football column." We blame our soggy brain on the rainy weather.***

-- Junior Seau is back in town, the Herald reports, and is expected to be back for a second season with the Patriots. With the broken arm healed, the only remaining detail appears to be the process of passing the physical.

-- The Cleveland Cavaliers are heading to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 15 years. The Cavs eliminated the Nets Friday night with a 88-72 Game 6 finish. In the west, the Phoenix Suns mounted a fourth-quarter comeback, but were unable to top the San Antonio Spurs, losing 114-106. San Antonio won the series 4-2.
