Cockfighter will be at the Brattle Grindhouse on Thursday, May 24, at 7:30 pm.
The absolute weirdest movie to grace the Brattle Grindhouse is coming up, and it isn't for you if you lean toward the vegetarian or the vegan. This grindhouse flick is 1973's Cockfighter, starring the late, great Warren Oates, a character actor who specialized in the bizarre.
While it might seem like straight-up trash, Cockfighter also has a decent pedigree. The director is Monte Hellman, who did the cult classic Two-Lane Blacktop.
Oates is the cockfighter of the title. He takes a vow of silence after he has been disqualified from the "sport."
Harry Dean Stanton and Ed Begley Jr. also star, which cements the movie's credentials when it comes to weirdness. You haven't lived until you see Ed Begley Jr. in overalls smashing out a station-wagon window.
The trailer has a brilliant narrator who calls cockfighting "the dirtiest sport in the world."
For the record, Bostonist thinks cockfighting is one of the dumbest sports known to man. But the trailer has us sold.
