Today's State Senator Race: A Primer

052807_petruccelli.jpgFrom the "You Do Know There's an Election Today, Right?" department: Tomorrow is the election for the person who replace former State Senate President Robert Travaglini, affectionately known around here as "T-Vag." Anyone who lives in the First Suffolk and Middlesex District (parts of Boston, Cambridge, Revere, and Winthrop) will be interested.

So let's get started. The men who want to replace T-Vag in the hearts and minds of Democrats are Dan Rizzo and Anthony Petruccelli.

Their Backgrounds
Petruccelli: Currently a state representative in East Boston
Rizzo: Revere city councilor. (Wonder how he felt when his fellow councilor Mark Casella got into that drunk-driving accident?)

Petruccelli: This doesn't quite have the same weight because their district doesn’t involve South Boston. But Petruccelli is getting started a little higher up in the ladder since he's a State Rep. His endorsement list will also give you an insider kind of feeling.
Rizzo: He's not a political outsider, but he is a literal outsider - he doesn't live in the district he hopes to represent, but he says he'll move if he wins.

Gay Marriage
Petruccelli: Yes
Rizzo: Yes

The Website
Petruccelli: Has an annoying splash page, but information was easy to find. Might be a little too heavy on the red, white, and blue.
Rizzo: Pretty good. Rizzo looks like he should be a Law & Order cast member. But it was a little hard to find his issues section.

Endorsements
Petruccelli: Cambridge Chronicle. They also thought he was more familiar with the issues than Rizzo was. Tom Menino. T-Vag. MassEquality. The Globe.
Rizzo: Jarrett Barrios, who is just now leaving office. A long list of Revere officials.

What They Have in Common
You've probably asked why we don't have a lot of issues listed for these two. We'll let the Cambridge Chronicle explain: "Dan Rizzo and Anthony Petruccelli agree. A lot."
