Because It's Never Too Early
Thomas Menino endorsed Hilary Clinton today in her bid for President in the 2008 election. The Globe brings us news of the spokesperson on spokesperson announcement:
"She has the experience to lead the nation during these uncertain times," Dot Joyce, Menino's spokeswoman, said. "She's long been a supporter of America's cities and will bring the urban agenda back to the table." …Menino says, oh, sorry. According to Menino's spokeswoman the endorsement of Clinton is all about her support for cities. Support of the city as an autonomous entity is a good reason for a mayor to throw his support behind a candidate, but we'll have to wait another year and a half (or at least until the primaries begin wicked early in 2008) before we find out if Menino is going to reverse his curse after endorsing Tom Reilly's failed gubernatorial campaign last year. That endorsement was made on more than just the fact the two shared a name, but still seemed to be insider party politics by nature. The Clinton endorsement, like his endorsement for Reilly, the Meninio endorsement comes early in the cycle and goes for the apparent front-runner. It may prove to be a help to the Clinton camp or just more egg on mumble's face. But, as the Globe found out from Menino's office, it pays to ask – Clinton was the only candidate to ask for Menino's endorsement. Perhaps the rest of the candidates are too busy campaigning in New Hampshire.A spokeswoman for Clinton's campaign said the senator welcomed Menino's support.
"Mayor Menino is a strong and effective leader, and I am honored to have his support," Clinton said in a statement today.
