Weekly Music Picks: Yankees Hangover Edition

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg

Paris is in jail, the Red Sox are on their way to California, Mitt is still running for president, but we're bringing it back to the clubs. Well, the clubs and urban outfitters. Some folks that seem like they've been around forever (dinosaur jr.) and those who legitimately have been around forever (Lee "scratch" Perry) come and visit the nontraditional and traditional venues, respectively, as part of this weeks music picks.

Tuesday 6/5
bostonistico.jpgThe Sea and Cake
You may know them by other names (Archer Prewitt, Sam Prekop) and other projects (Tortoise, Gastr del Sol). Having released their eponymous debut in 1994, The Sea and Cake have achieved the jazz-tinged post-rock equivalent of tenure. They'll be guest lecturing at the rock end of the the Paradise in support of Everybody, their first new album in years, which hews closely to their tried-and-true formula: ten songs, each averaging a compact three and a half minutes, all oblique and breathy. The only slightly more forceful Zincs and Loney, Dear open.

Wednesday 6/6
bostonistico.jpgEric Hutchinson
Bostonist likes Eric Hutchinson's plucky demeanor. The Maryland-based singer-songwriter plays his affable sunshine pop with a gusto and describes his material as "a party in your mouth," which can't not make us smile. We'll also give the songster a nod for carrying over the feel-good playfulness to the rest of his empire - by which we mean the merch. We actually first heard about Hutchinson through a green t-shirt that plainly stated that "Eric Hutchinson Is Pretty Good." While you can't get that shirt these days, you can find one on his site that explains that he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Fight against those urges to pinch his cheeks on Wednesday, during a set at the Paradise Lounge that also features Kate Klim.

Thursday 6/7
bostonistico.jpgThe Stills
Something a little screwy is going on at Great Scott on Thursday night, but we like it. The Allston space is hosting The Stills and Wonderful Spells for a night that is free to patrons who RSVP ahead of time. Do what you will with the psychedelic glam rock the latter band provides - but a free show featuring Montreal-based The Stills makes for a red-letter day. We caught the five-piece in Texas last year and left the band's set with a dopey grin on our face. We may have been stammering a bit about how kickass "Helicopters" is live, but we can't confirm that - it's all a pretty glam-rock blur.
Great Scott, 9 p.m. 21+ free with RSVP (visit Great Scott website for details)
The Stills: website | Lee Perry
The original Upsetter, dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry, rolls into town on Friday to kick off a U.S. tour with Brooklyn-based Dub is a Weapon. For a taste of Perry, check the
Upsetter website for this month's podcast, "Scratch re-scratched," featuring remixes of classic Perry tracks by the likes of Bill Laswell, Spring Heel Jack, Dub Colossus, and Wayne "Wayne & Wax" Marshall (formerly of Boston). Perry recently turned 71. Who knows if he'll be back in Boston, so check him while you can.

Monday 6/11
bostonistico.jpgDinosaur Jr.
Dinosaur Junior's myspace bio is a little cringeworthy - "This myth exploded in a hail of flaming toads in the spring of 1989, when the band's original trio line-up burst like a ripe sac of pus" - but the band can get away with upping the squeam factor because the band has been rocking for ages now. The Boston band's latest (ok, Western Mass origin), "Beyond," is the first to feature its original lineup - J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph, since "Bug" dropped in 1988 - and the band will be performing a live in-store benefit for WERS on Monday. The 8 p.m. show at the Harvard Square Urban Outfitters, sponsored by Free YR Radio, is available to those who head to Free YR Radio's website and print out an e-ticket. Remember, first-come, first-served.

bostonistico.jpgJoss Stone - SOLD OUT
Joss Stone seems to get people talking about everything but her music - her hair color, her personal life, you name it - but let's face it: girl can sing. She's bringing her bluesy take on r&b pop to Avalon on Monday night, and we bet a lot of folks will be waiting to hear "Tell Me 'Bout It" live - and to see whether she really does take to the Avalon stage barefoot. And to see what color her hair is. And to see...yeah, you get the point.
Avalon, 7 p.m.
