Concert Preview: Mary Timony

Timony.jpgMary Timony's brand of lo-fi indie rock is well-suited to today's dreamy pop scene, but the sassy strut takes us back to the 90s/Liz Phair/Save Ferris days - now and then at the same time.

For good reason: Timony became a fixture in the blossoming lo-fi scene of that decade gone by. Frontwoman to Boston three-piece Helium, Timony shared a label with Phair, rocked the stage with the guys and became the voice of the band over which super-cool indie kids swooned. The music continued until '98, when Helium ended and Timony went solo.

A couple of albums later, the D.C. resident is returning to Boston to support her latest release, "The Shapes We Make." Bostonist is totally digging the track "Sharp Shooter" and find it fitting that, given her place in relatively recent Boston music history, Timony will be headlining the Middle East Upstairs tonight. We imagine that folks who were around in Helium's heyday - and those who wish now that they had been - are going to welcome Timony and her new band home.
