D’oh! D Line Is Down for the Summer - But There Is a Way Out!

061707_bus_stop.jpgIf you take the D-line, all we can say is - sorry, you’re kinda screwed until August.
But, don’t despair. We’re here to help you. If you’re crafty and lucky, you’re only a little bit screwed! That’s right!

Remember when the new Charlie cards came out and everyone was all, "This sucks! I never take a bus. Why do I am I forced to pay for a service that I never use?" Now you can stick it to the man. Because, our little Riverside Ragamuffins, meet your new BFFs – the Charlie card and - wait for it - THE BUS!

God, we hate to give our hard-earned D-Line avoiding secrets away, but this is a municipal emergency. We give and we give. Anyway, here goes:

We lived on the Riverside Line for 10 years, and we hated every day of our commute. We complained constantly. Then, one glorious day, the cleaning lady who lived in the apartment downstairs (back when cleaning ladies could afford to live in Brookline Village) gave us some sage advice: "Why don’t you take the 60?" Our world has never been the same.

Yes. The Route 60 bus will take you from Kenmore Square to Chestnut Hill! The 60 is not packed full of drunk students and Red Sox hoi polloi. It’s air-conditioned, and, best of all, unlike a ghetto replacement shuttle, it’s fast, and the people who drive them and ride them know where they’re going.

While we’re at it, Consider the Route 66. It’s like a little miracle.
The Sweet 66 will take you around the world, practically - from Dudley Station to Harvard Square, via Coolidge Corner (where you can hop onto the C line), Alston (B-Line), Huntington Ave (E-Line), Tremont and Columbus (Orange Line).

Then there’s good ol’ reliable #57. This baby will take you from Watertown to Kenmore, via Newton Corner.

That is just the beginning. Go to MBTA.COM and find a real bus route that will whisk you away from the whining replacement shuttle-bus hosers.

Kristin, you are the ambassador of Boston. You are the queen. I adore your every written word.

It happened again. I started reading and enjoying, and it turned out to be yours.

Thank you, but...

The 66 bus is a "little miracle"?

Have you ever actually been on that bus? There is a reason it nearly has the call number of Satan. That bus is hell.

(They are *trying* to make it better, I know. Now it runs only about 45 minues late, insead of a full hour. And they run in packs of 3, instead of 4 or 5. But man, the people on the 66 wouldn't stand up for a blind, one-legged pregnant person...)

Hi, thanks for your comments, Sarah! -

Ha! Hells yeah (Satan reference!) I have ridden #66 many times, and you are 100% correct. (I find the 66 to later and the riders to be more a-holey in the morning than in the evening for some reason.)

BUT! I must stand by my claim that #66 does NOT suck as much as a ghetto replacement shuttle service that runs down Rte 9 during construction (shudder).
