No More Screaming for Ice Cream? - Updated

061307_ice_cream_man.jpg Update: We hear that, at today's city council meeting, LaMattina said to his fellow councilors, "I apologize for some of the heat we took on this ordinance." We also hear that Sam Yoon feels "shivers up his spine" when he hears the familiar ice-cream tinkle. (Is that a good or a bad thing?) The discussion about the ice-cream-truck music has been moved to the city and neighborhood services committee.

Ice-Cream truck drivers might have to mute themselves if councilor Sal LaMattina and a group of citizens in East Boston have their way.

Sal LaMattina heard complaints from the East Boston neighborhood he represents. Apparently the ice-cream truck drivers have been getting too rowdy for their tastes. He also said he's been awakened in the middle of the night by some raging ice-cream truck drivers.

We like what City Councilor Stephen Murphy had to say about the entire matter: "Yeah, it’s annoying. But not as annoying as gunshots.” Hear, hear.

And we gotta disagree with the Herald's Michele McPhee. She called ice-cream-truck jingles "creepy calliope music." It's the sound of summer! But we must give her propers for using the phrase "popsicle purveyors" in her story.

If you want "creepy calliope music," check out Ice Cream Man with Clint Howard, ok? Image from Wikipedia.

The Herald article wins for lots of reasons, but the Americana is bang-on:

Lily Alvarado, 46, who was watching her 13-year-old son play baseball at Peters Park in the South End yesterday, said the ice cream truck that pulls up to the ballpark on hot summer afternoons doesn’t bother her...

“It’s annoying after a while. You’re watching TV in your house, and you hear the music and you have to turn up TV,” said Leo Addivinola, 48.
