Legislators Tackle Same-Sex Marriage Today - Maybe

king-and-king.jpgLast weekend, Deval Patrick marched in the Pride parade. And he has vociferously opposed adding a ban on same-sex marriage to the 2008 ballot. Supporters of gay rights have many reasons to feel good.

But today is going to be nerve-wracking because the Legislature might vote again on the ballot measure at the constitutional convention. In the winter, the Legislature approved adding a ballot measure that would give voters the option to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Sixty-two legislators voted for it (including ex-Senate Prez T-Vag).

If at least 50 lawmakers support the measure in today's vote, then the measure goes on the ballot, and voters will decide. If not enough legislators support the measure, then the measure stays off the ballot, and the rights are preserved as stated by the Supreme Court.

Hence, there's been a lot of lobbying going on. WCVB reports, "Gay marriage advocates said that they are within two to four votes of killing the amendment for good."

Then again, Senate President Therese Murray could delay the vote, but that gets everyone's dander up, including the Supreme Court's. To borrow the words of Blue Mass Group, who is going to live-blog the Con-Con, "It's time this thing is over, for good. Enough is enough."

The big event starts today at 1:00 pm.
