Sports Redux: Late Night Edition

471688935_9159b0a08f_m.jpgJerry Remy summed it up perfectly last night: "Both are terrible."

The Rem wasn't talking about the play on display Saturday night at Petco Park in San Diego (although at times, he wouldn't have been far off), but was discussing the throwback uniforms worn by the Sox and Padres last night.

Memo to both teams: burn those uniforms now. It looked as if "The Wizard of Oz" had thrown up all over Petco Park. Boston was stuck in a black and gray Kansas, with its drab (and awfully Yankees-reminiscent) uniforms, while San Deigo players were expected to wear Technicolor displays of retro 1982 stylings. And while we laughed and totally enjoyed the Padres showing for, say, the first inning, it got old quickly. When neither team looks comfortable in the uniforms as they're playing a game, neither should have to wear those ever again.

That said, there was some baseball going on on Saturday night and the Sox managed to come out on top, 2-1. Daisuke Matsuzaka picked up the win with an effort that seems best summed up as "adequate." The kid got the job done, but not before suggesting that he was going to have on on-mound meltdown during the bottom of the first inning. Three batters, three walks and a pitching delivery that left Jason Varitek diving almost every pitch - Bostonist was worried that we were watching millions upon millions of dollars go up in smoke.

He bounced back, as he tends to do (six innings, five hits nine strikeouts, five walks) and walked away with the win. But Dice-K still makes us nervous. We've been suspecting that Matsuzaka is going to be next year's Beckett - give him a year to settle in and get some quiet confidence and wind up wowed - but what about this season? These control issues just don't belong in MLB play.

On the offensive side, the Sox used the fourth inning to put up a couple of runs and give Dice-K a buffer. Boston faced down starter Greg Maddux and scored Dustin Pedroia and Manny Ramirex off hits by Kevin Youkilis and 'Tek. That was pretty much all they needed in a pitching showdown kind of game.

Side note: anyone else think that, with the throwback uniforms, Padres infielder Khalil Greene was a dead ringer for "Fast Times At Ridgemont High's" legendary Jeff Spicoli?

Tim Wakefield takes the mound tonight against Chris Young. Another late night for East Coast Sox viewers...

-- Zach Hamill is the big name in Bruins circles today. Boston selected the 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pound center as the No. 8 pick in the NHL draft last night and had Cam Neely do the honor of announcing his name. Today's Globe article showed us the difference between normal people and pro hockey players. When Hamill talked about being picked in the draft by the Boston Bruins and announced by a legend, he said the following: "And yeah, I was happy it was Cam Neely. He's a Hall of Famer. You can't say anything bad about that guy." What we would have said was more along these lines: "Dude, did you hear that? Seriously. Did someone get that on tape? CAM NEELY SAID MY NAME."
