Stephen Carter at Harvard Book Store

Stephen Carter knows university politics. He's a law professor at Yale. So it is no surprise that the literary mystery New England White focuses on a university president and his family.

The president in question, Lemaster Carlyle, is a black man who has risen to a position of power. He's friends with the president of the United States, and he appears to be a success in his public and personal life. The fact that he's black doesn't seem to have been an obstacle, as his family has lived in the college town of Elm Harbor for years.

But when a black professor is murdered, some juicy secrets start to spill out. USA Today has an excerpt in which Carter introduces the reader to Lemaster Carlyle and his wife, Julia, and Carter digs a little bit deeper into their tightly controlled lives with every paragraph.
