Mitt Romney Pulled a Clark Griswold – And What Would Chevy Chase Think?

062807_lampoon.jpg

Last night, the vision of Mitt Romney in cornrows danced in our heads. This morning, the thought of Mitt Romney morphing with Chevy Chase replaced the cornrows.

The Globe has been doing this seemingly endless series on Mitt Romney's life, so that Romney's mug has been staring out at us from the front page. You'd think that, since Mitt Romney was the state's governor recently, we'd be likely to remember his defining characteristics.

But the Globe unveiled a detail regarding Romney pulling a Clark Griswold and tying the family pet to the top of the car during a road trip in 1983. Ana Marie Cox, the original Wonkette and current Time writer smelled something funny when she came across the following passage:

The white Chevy station wagon with the wood paneling was overstuffed with suitcases, supplies, and sons when Mitt Romney climbed behind the wheel to begin the annual 12-hour family trek from Boston to Ontario ... Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family's hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon's roof rack. He'd built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog.

The ride was anything but comfortable. Seamus didn't enjoy the trip and crapped all over the station wagon, much to the delight of Romney's sons.

Cox called a PETA rep, who promptly flipped out as PETA is wont to do. Hurling animal-cruelty charges at Romney is an overreaction – the dog did live, after all - but it the incident showcases some spectacularly bad judgment.

But can you imagine how much time Romney spent building the carrier windshield? He probably thought it was a fantastic idea when he put that dog on top of the car. And surely poop flew off that car, spattering the windows of unsuspecting drivers. The Romney family is lucky they had to deal with only the dog rather than an irate Masshole.

Griswold eyes the doomed station wagon from National Lampoon's Vacation.
