Smokey and the Bandit at the Somerville

Smokey and the Bandit will screen at midnight on Saturday and Sunday at the Somerville Theater.

With the sticky, sweaty mugginess that's descended upon Boston, the thought of a truckload of cold beer seems heavenly. And the Somerville Theater is reading your mind - they're showing the beer-smuggling classic Smokey and the Bandit at midnight tonight and tomorrow night.

The plot involves Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, interstate commerce, Coors, runaway brides, and a dog named Fred. The characters have Southern names like - ahem - "Buford," "Cledus," and "Enos." But the best parts are the high-speed car chases, the CB radio lingo, and the thought of all that beer in one place.

Smokey and the Bandit was destined to play the Somerville Theater now that they can serve beer. Even if they can't serve it at the midnites (they have to stop after 11 pm), you gotta love a place that offers what folks have called the "brew 'n' view."
