Vicarious iPhoning

062907_paper_iphone.JPGAn employee of the Cambridge AT&T store, which was selling iPhones, said his store sold out of the fascinating new gadgets in one hour flat, between 6 and 7 pm last night. He said that people didn't get too crazy, but a few people started their iPhone vigil at 11pm Thursday night.

Boston NOW asked local comedian and Dig columnist Baratunde Thurston, who is kinda pissed with his iPod right now, what he thought of the whole shebang. He's posted some great photos of the wait at the mall, and he wonders why a police officer was brought in to "explain the iPhone sales process."

Bostonist also noted the discreet presence of an officer in the Cambridge AT&T. When asked if the officer had to "get active" during the iPhone sales, the guy looked perplexed and said no. But, hey, Bostonist has the Blotter, so we had to know.

The Globe chatted up some of the iPhone obsessed. One guy is already worried about coworkers getting their "grubby" fingers on it.

Hiawatha Bray at the Globe says the iPhone is plenty worth it: "The iPhone is exactly as cool as you've heard, and then some."

If you didn't have the money or the opportunity to get one of these babies, one clever soul at Creative Techs laid out the proper dimensions so you can make a paper iPhone. This might tide you over until you can get a real one. But you might want to read this information first about AT&T's chumminess with the NSA.
