Sports Redux: Detroit Rock City
Today's Redux is going to be short and sweet - let's face it, there isn't a whole lot of good news to report from the first in the Red Sox three-game visit to Detroit. Friday night was just plain ugly, a 9-2 loss to the Tigers that served as the proverbial "other shoe" from Thursday's Devil Rays slaughter. After tearing up Fenway the night before, it seemed the Sox had nothing left to start off their final pre-All Star series.
But, then again, were any members of the regular roster even playing? Continuing the practice of giving ailing guys a day off, Terry Francona let David Ortiz (barking muscles) and Kevin Youkilis (strained left quadriceps) take it easy and Manny Ramirez (umpire irritation) was pulled pretty early into the game. Instead, we had a chance to meet Jeff Bailey. Bailey's first major league hit should have been a RBI sacrifice, but we also had Wily Mo Pena in the lineup, which meant it turned into a double play at the plate. Sorry, Bailey - welcome to the club.
Julian Tavarez started out on the mound strongly enough, but a couple of disastrous innings (three runs in the fourth inning, five in the fifth) did him in. Andrew Miller, on the other hand, kept the Sox to three hits and a run over seven innings.
Yeah. Moving on.
-- Greg Oden made his professional debut during NBA Summer League play against the Celtics on Friday night. Sure, Oden fouled out and the Celtics defeated the Trail Blazers 74-66, but considering the whole lottery huhbub, we think it was a little on the cruel side for the NBA to so clearly rub it in that we didn't get him.
