from Kevin Church.

Ed. Update A duller version of the above photo appeared on this site earlier today. We hope to have corrected the issue here in the full vibrancy of the photo as posted by Kevin Church in his Flickr stream. You can also find much more of Kevin's photography at his photog site here. Please accept our apologies.

I would love more info in the posts pertaining to what we are looking at in the photo(s) of the day(s)... old world journalism style... who, what, where, when, how, and if you have time - why?

This photo was taken during the annual Dance Party in Cambridge's Central Square.

What I'd like to know is why my photo was altered.

yeah, I do wish that the bostonist editor provided some explanation for her photo selection. I generally (with a few exceptions) like her choices, but I think the feature would be more informative and entertaining for us to be given a few lines of text - as the other -ist.com's provide. Even the universalhub provides a nice phrase or two.

About the alteration: I gotta agree with Kevin - the original is far better. I have long enjoyed Kevin's photos for their saturated colors, personal warmth, and clever depth of focus - and this photo is a prime example of his talent. The bostonist's desaturation and darkening really doesn't help it - its still a nice shot, but it loses alot of its vibrancy, and imposes an evening mood that doesn't fit the scene at all.

I really think the bostonist oughta replace with Kevin's original, pronto!

The original of this photo is so much more beautiful than the one posted. Altered without permission? Even with free publicity, that's not kosher.

Sincerely,

Novice

I just love this photo!

bravo kevin having this photo chosen, great event, great photo.

boo to the bostonist without even alerting the artist that a change would be made to the the photo before posting it.

no response from the bostonist yet?! This is getting ridiculous.

I fixed the posted photo - should reflect your image more correctly kevin. Sorry for that.

...and let me add to nay-sayers chiding us for slow response. Sorry for the delay in the response. I take this issue very seriously, but I also have a full time day job. Bostonist contributors are doing it for the love, the passion, the ability to show off our lack of spelling ability, etc...

The mistake on this was mine. The problem was with the color space. When I copied and pasted Kevin's photo into photoshop it put the photo which was originally an SRGB into a prophoto color space. Then when I saved it for web that's where the color shift happened and I didn't check after it was uploaded. My apologies.

As for how I pick photos. I usually look at the most recent photos and select one that I think is the most aesthetically pleasing or interesting. I try to balance consider balance as much as possible with what there is available. For example if we have portraits a couple days in a row I'll try to find a good landscape or macro, etc. I also try to use different photographers. One photographer may have 100 great photos uploaded at once but I wouldn't want to feature them every day.

This is how we do it now. We're open to suggestions of ways to make the process better...ie. a flickr bostonist group to discuss, etc.
