Sports Redux: Derby Time

derby.jpgWe have a confession to make: we didn't pay a lot of attention to last night's Home Run Derby. Our tolerance for Chris Berman yelling "back back back" is low. Our desire to see kayakers crashing into each other in San Francisco Bay was present, but not overwhelming. And without Papi, what's the point?

So congratulations to Anaheim's Vlad Guerrero, who won the Derby, despite the fact that no home runs landed in the huge blob of kayaks. We regret only that Vlad wasn't given an actual derby (pictured at left) in which to conduct his press conference. Because that would have been really cool.

So tonight is the actual All-Star Game, or the "Battle For Red Sox/Brewers Home Field Advantage" (don't say we didn't call it). The starting lineup for the AL: Ichiro Suzuki, Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, A-Rod, Vlad Guerrero, Magglio Ordonez, Ivan Rodriguez, Placido Polanco, Danny Haren. For the NL: Jose Reyes, Barry Bonds, Carlos Beltran, Junior Griffey, David Wright, Prince Fielder, Russell Martin, Chase Utley, and Jake Peavy. Is it just us, or are there three or four NL starters who you wouldn't recognize if they showed up at your door out of uniform? We like our chances.

The Celtics lost their Summer League game to the Spurs, but gained a small forward. Yes, another one. Brandon Wallace of South Carolina, who Danny Ainge called two minutes after the draft, and who impressed everyone in the first summer game, signed a partially-guaranteed two-year deal with the C's. Meanwhile, old friend Antoine Walker was robbed at gunpoint in his Miami home (the second time Toine's been robbed since he made it into the league. We're just happy that this story about Antoine didn't include the words "ill-advised shot".

If you care at all about tennis, Bud Collins' Globe column today is a treasure trove of anecdotes and lore from Bud's 435 years covering Wimbledon. He'll still be writing for the Globe, but will no longer be commentating on NBC, or showing off his loud pants to the world.

Hey,
Here's a video and a photo of David Ortiz hitting baseballs into McCovey Cove at a large inflatable model of his new Reebok cleat. Hope you like it.
