Bad Movie Madness: Switchblade Sisters and Troll 2

071307_robbie_lee.jpgSwitchblade Sisters is running as part of Coolidge Corner's "Ladies of the Grindhouse" special and will screen tonight, Friday, July 13, and tomorrow, Saturday, July 14, at midnight. Troll 2 will screen at the Brattle tomorrow, Saturday, July 14, at 9:30 pm.

Hot summer weather turns moviegoers' brains to mush. This season is not the time for heavy, Bergman-esque fare. But, this weekend, Coolidge Corner and the Brattle are serving up heaping portions of bad-movie deliciousness in the form of Jack Hill's awe-inspiring Switchblade Sisters and Troll 2, which gives Plan 9 From Outer Space a run for its money as one of the worst movies of all time.

First up is 1975's Switchblade Sisters, a movie so imaginative in its badness that Quentin Tarantino was inspired to reissue it. Lace (the helium-voiced Robbie Lee) is the head of ruthless girl gang the "Dagger Debs," but the arrival of a new girl (Joanne Nail) threatens her authority, and her supposed right-hand woman, the appropriately named "Patch" (Monica Gayle), is only too willing to turn Lace against the new girl. Highlights include a bloodbath at the roller rink, a shootout involving radical communists, and Lee's astounding voice. (She later went on to do voice work for Rainbow Brite cartoons.) For example, when she thinks her man is doing her wrong, Lace squeaks ominously, "If you go, it's gonna turn out baaaaad."

Meanwhile, the Brattle just can't get enough of the cinematic junk food that is Troll 2. They showed the flick during February's Schlock-a-Thon because of the movies' oddities, which includes the young protagonist urinating on a table to thwart goblins. Oh, and there's the simple fact that, well, there aren't any trolls in the movie.

Best of all, cast members will be on hand to revel in their achievement. The folks at the Troll 2 fan blog are already gearing up for the event. In honor of the screening, we are showing one of the many, many video mashups of Troll 2. This one proves that Troll 2 is indeed bringing sexy back:

Promo still of Robbie Lee, looking tough but talking not-so-tough in Switchblade Sisters. Troll 2 mashup from YouTube.
