--The shootings of five people, including a 9-year-old girl, that took place in two different places in Mattapan on Saturday night may be related. Commish Ed Davis, who has been especially busy lately, referenced possible gang activity. The 9-year-old got shot in the back.
In sheer coincidence, one of the shootings interrupted yet another birthday party. We're not sure why birthday parties have gotten so dangerous, but some gun-toting, allegedly birthday-hating thug(s) popped off and shot people, and wrecked everyone's good time.
Rafael Nova, the brother of a 15-year-old who got shot, told the Globe: "You can't even go outside anymore." Apparently, you can't have outdoor birthday parties anymore, either.
--Speaking of parties, the driver of a crew of alleged pistol-packers tried to get out of being pulled over early yesterday morning by saying they were leaving a baby shower. The BPD writes that the driver really went the extra mile to cover for his friends and even produced a gift for said shower. The BPD was not deterred, and they arrested three men for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, among other charges.
--A car crash is pretty standard, but some weird details are emerging about a pile-up involving six cars that killed 2 people and injured 7 on Saturday night. According to Falmouth police, an SUV crashed through a steel gate at Otis Air National Guard Base and later ran a red light, leading to the crash.
According to the Globe, the two men in the SUV were driving around the base and acting strangely: "A green Toyota 4Runner failed to stop at a manned checkpoint at the baseā¦.The vehicle traveled 4 miles through the base before being stopped by guards at a locked gate. When questioned by guards, the two male occupants in the vehicle said they were not in the military; when the guards notified State Police, the driver allegedly gunned the vehicle through a steel barrier and sped off the compound."
The driver of the SUV, Michael Catarius, is in critical condition. His passenger, Michael Warren, was killed. One of the unsuspecting drivers of the other cars, Edward Kipp, died as well.
All charges alleged until proven under law. Image of a birthday cake from Wikimedia Commons.
