BPD Official Undergoes Emergency Procedure to Extract Foot From Mouth

072107_foot_mouth.jpgRobert Dunford, second-in-command of the BPD, must attend "sensitivity training" because he compared sexual assaults to "courting rituals."

Dunford put his foot in his mouth on Thursday during a meeting discussing sexual assaults in East Boston. The Herald writes that Dunford specifically compared groping to "a new way of courting." We don't know what kind of "courting rituals" Dunford's witnessed or been involved with, but the comment was offensive on so many levels. It boggles the mind.

Dunford hasn't been No. 2 for long (though some may argue he's got No. 2 for brains after this incident). He was promoted during Commish Ed Davis' shakeup that was intended to improve relations between the BPD and the community.

Even though Dunford swiftly issued an apology, his statements have had the opposite effect, and his boneheaded behavior may have left Commish Ed Davis wondering if he's made the right call.
