East Boston Celebrates Italy With Sausage and a Stallone

The Italian festival runs the rest of the day, Saturday, July 21, in Central Square in East Boston. The sausage-eating contest starts at 6:00 pm, and Frank Stallone performs at 7:30. Visit Italia Unita's website for the full schedule.

East Boston is holding its Italian festival today. The experience will include a competitive-eating contest starring sausage, and the headliner is a Stallone - not Sly, but Frank.

Regarding the sausage, this isn't some namby-pamby local glutton-a-thon. The Association of Independent Competitive Eaters is taking this event seriously. The AICE notes that Gentleman Joe Menchetti set the record for the event by shoveling in 3.86 pounds in 8 minutes. Burp.

The site for Italia Unita is taking great pride in the sausage-eating contest, and the site showcases several of the competitors who will be tackling the sausage on Saturday. Massachusetts local Tom "Goose" Gilbert is looking to defeat Menchetti today. We hope Gilbert brings a box of Tums with him.

For those of you not into overeating and potential "reversals," you have Frank Stallone. Stallone's website offers a taste of what you can expect from him music-wise. The samples seem a little old, but it's loungey stuff that will suit a summer festival.

We just went to this festival tonight and had a great time. It has all the character of the North End Italian festivals and it was highly amusing to see Frank Stallone. The food is really excellent and it is a good place to bring the kids.
